Further Updates

Okay, I took the forums down about 7-8hrs ago, and said it would be 30-45mins. Obviously my estimate was WAY off... so let me explain a bit about what happened.

As I said in my message, I was reindexing the search tables. These tables are MASSIVE. Basically what I had to do was write a script to go over every single post ever made, copy every word in every post to two seperate tables to allow indexed searches. Now, problems with this. There is over 161,000 posts on the forum... so doing them all at once simply wasn't an option, these had to be done in batches of 500 at the most. So that's over 320 runs of the script; excluding errors.

When I first put the script up and began it, the autorefreshing from the meta tags didn't work. This was a problem in firefox, and it took me about an hour to work that out... I eventually got JavaScript to auto-refresh the page about an hour after I worked out the meta tags weren't working properly.

After that, about 30,000 posts into it... the script died completely. This was because I was using an editted version of a script I downloaded. The coding in this script was simple horrible. After rewriting it, I had to restart it again. This time things were going fine. It was fast at the start; so I went and played WoW for a few hours while it automatically updated the indexed tables.

I sign off like 3hrs later, and find out that it's slowed down to a crawl. Taking upto 4-5mins to do 500, compared to 20 seconds at the start. This was because of the script layout, every run through the script caused it to have to read 80,000 rows before adding 1 new one. The database was dying from it (and hopefully the host isn't too pissed with this). So I rewrote it again, and eventually forced it to period start from the current record... This sped things up from 4-5mins to 1-2mins.

Okay, still not good. Still taking WAY too long to insert all the records, and it was only getting slower again... not a script problem this time! I went to Taz and mentioned it, and he said I should remove the indexes of the table if I want to speed it up. So I tried that, it killed the script. Unfortunately part of the phpBB script to insert indexed words caused it to die trying to read from 6million records without indexes. So I scoured through the code and found out what was causing it to try read from the 6million line table... Removed that script, removed the indexes, and I burned through the last 40,000 posts in about 50mins.

That brings us to now. The script has finished indexing the posts, finally and it has resulted in a table with 7.8million entries in the table.

So, I apologize it took so long... but I wanted it finished so it's out of the way, and if the host does get pissed I can tell them it's a one off thing -- which it is.

Search should now work correctly... with all posts ever made, I hope. :\
