Fighting Styles

These are now the official Dae Luin methods of determining the winner in an RP battle.

T1 - Quality of post.
T2 - Length of post.
T3 - Length and quality combined (a balance struck between the two when judging).

Additional methods are:

T0 - Levels and items, regardless of length and/or quality of post.
Tx - Winner decided because of plot decisions/prior agreement.

You may choose other people not involved in the battle/RP to act as judges if you wish.

The criteria on which quality of post will be decided is to be agreed upon beforehand by the participants in the fight, and is to be presented clearly to any judges they may have chosen.

T1 Fighting Style FAQ

Q: What is T1 Style Combat?

T1 is one of the methods of combat used on DaeLuin. It is a method of deciding who wins any given battle between two people based on the quality of the post, rather than the length of the posts or the relative power levels of the players.

Q: Quality of the post? Who decides that?

Usually, both RPers will decide on a third party to act as a judge. Tournaments will appoint their own judges. Either way, they will adjudicate, which can be something as simple as “Player A wins” or as in depth as individual scores for various categories such as 'Grammar,' 'Style,' 'Creativity,' or 'Pace.'

Q: Is there anything other than quality that goes into a T1? What about character level? What about my items?

Character level doesn't matter in regards to the final decision in a T1 battle, only the quality of the posts. They do, on the other hand, influence how powerful your spells are in-character, and they should be role-played appropriately. It is possible for a character with a much higher level to lose a T1 battle against a lower level opponent, if the opponent is a better writer. (After all, the strongest spell isn't necessarily the best RPed spell.) Items give your character more options, allowing you to be more creative with your posting, and achieve higher scores. On the other hand, a good RPer can still earn a high score with fewer items, if they're used creatively.

Q: How powerful is my item? Can I cut an angelic sword in half with my dagger if I RP well enough?

No. Items all have relative power levels based on things like how much damage they do, how much defense they provide, etc. You should role-play all items appropriately. Again, remember, hitting harder doesn't make you win, writing well does.

Q: What about spells that have no modifier, like the various Kinesis spells?

As always, players should use common sense when trying to roleplay any spell. The stronger your character is, the greater the effect of the spell. If it would be considered powerplaying or godmodding in normal RP, then it would be in a T1.

Q: On that topic, is godmodding or powerplaying allowed in a T1 battle?

All normal DaeLuin site rules apply in a T1 battle, including rules on godmodding or powerplaying. As usual, permission can be given to allow it, and this will not reflect negatively on your score. Remember, the scores are based on the quality of your writing, not on how many attacks you deal or receive.

Q: What other methods of judging a fight are commonly used on DaeLuin?

While T1 is the most common method, pre-arranged battles are also very popular. These are battles in which both participants agree to the winner beforehand, usually for plot reasons. Other types do exist, but they are much less commonly used, such a a battle based on length of post, or based on character level. You should always speak with the other person involved in a battle to decide on how it will be adjudicated.

Q: I lost! How can I improve?

Talking with other members is often a good method. Judges and more experienced members are a wealth of knowledge and can often give suggestions for improvement. More than anything, practicing makes perfect, so keep writing!
